Merry Yuletide, friends🎄

Hey folks and friends,

This week, in the spirit of the solstice, I wanted to share an interesting read with you. Talia Lavin, journalist and author of Wild Faith, also writes a newsletter called The Sword & The Sandwich, which I've been enjoying lately.

The most recent edition covers the traditions of different midwinter celebrations from around the world. Talia wrote about the probable origins of the Christmas ham, various winter spirits, and the Aztec god of frost, Itztlacoliuhqui, a one-time god of the dawn who gets punished after shooting an arrow at the sun and has an obsidian blade for a face. It's genuinely an interesting read and I learned a lot from it. Plus (this is where the "sandwich" part of the newsletter comes in), it includes a recipe for a mollete sandwich at the end, a Mexican comfort food made with refried beans, cheese, and pico de gallo. Click here to read it.

Lastly, here's a little poem about the winter solstice I wanted to share:

Merry Yuletide, friends. Here's to the days finally getting longer again!

Much love,
Sarah
